The aim of Project Whare Ora

  • Achieve the trust’s mission of “Developing Tino Rangatiratanga” or assisting whanau to achieve their maximum potential (In this case to move Whanau from state housing dependence to housing independence);
  • Provide security of tenure, and a safe peaceful living environment;
  • Provide affordable housing to whanau who would otherwise never be able to achieve home ownership;
  • To meet the housing needs of our community, in particular those seeking to make the transition from rental, unsafe accommodation into full home ownership.

Criteria to qualify for a Project “Whare Ora” home

All applicants MUST:

  • Have been refused home ownership assistance or
  • Be living in substandard housing conditions eg: Cow-shed, Condemned home, Bus, Lean-Too, Tent;
  • Comply with the No-Alcohol, No illegal Drugs, No Violence policy of the papakainga;
  • Fully complete & graduate from the Trusts Home Ownership Education programme;
  • Following the Home Ownership graduation for the first 5 years comply with any mutually agreed parenting, budgeting, specialists counselling including self help programme / plan;
  • Ensure their children attend on-site pre-school and parents attend on-site training (if not working or training or school off-site);
